Can I Use Just Chicken (JUST CHKN) for Dog Treats? Yes, Here's How

The entire premise of JUST CHKN is that one ingredient is enough. Not just enough, better. But I understand the skepticism, because we live in a world where food products are expected to have long ingredient lists. The idea that a bag of treats contains literally one thing can feel like something's missing.

Nothing's missing. Here's exactly how my wife and I make our chicken jerky dog treats for our own dogs; we use just chicken, and boy does it work well!

Why Chicken Breast Specifically

You can technically dehydrate any part of the chicken, but breast is what we use and what we recommend for a few reasons. It's the leanest cut, which matters for dogs, especially smaller breeds or dogs prone to weight gain. Lower fat content also means lower risk of digestive upset and pancreatitis issues. And breast meat has a clean, consistent texture that dehydrates evenly and produces that satisfying crunch dogs love.

What You'll Need

  • Boneless, skinless chicken breast (from your regular grocery store, that's where we get ours)

  • A food dehydrator capable of reaching 165°F internal temperature

  • A sharp knife and cutting board

  • Airtight storage containers

That's it. No marinade, no seasoning, no extras.

The Process

Slice it thin and consistently. Aim for about 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick slices. Too thick and the center won't dry fully in a reasonable time. Too thin and the texture gets more cracker-like and brittle. Consistent thickness across your slices means even drying, if some pieces are thicker than others, the thin ones will be done well before the thick ones are safe.

Chilling the chicken breast in the freezer for 15-20 minutes before slicing makes it much easier to get clean, even cuts.

Arrange on dehydrator trays with space between pieces. Airflow is what dries the treats, so don't crowd the trays. Overlapping pieces won't dry evenly.

Dehydrate at the right temperature for long enough. This is the part that matters most for safety. Poultry needs to reach an internal temperature of 165°F to be safe. Set your dehydrator to at least 160-165°F and plan for a minimum of 8 hours. Thicker slices may need 10-12 hours.

My wife and I figured out the right thickness-to-time ratio through real trial and error over years of doing this. The patience game is real, pulling them too early is the most common mistake, and the consequences range from soft treats that go bad quickly to, in the worst case, food safety issues.

Check for doneness. Finished treats should be firm, dry, and leathery throughout, no soft spots, no tackiness. Bend a piece: it should flex slightly and maybe crack, but not feel moist or pliable at the center. If it bends without any resistance, it needs more time.

Cool completely before storing. Don't seal warm treats in a container, the residual heat creates condensation, which reintroduces moisture. Let them cool on the trays for 30-60 minutes first.

Is Plain Chicken Safe for Dogs?

Yes, chicken breast is one of the safest, most digestible proteins for dogs. It's frequently used in veterinary prescription diets and elimination protocols for a reason. No salt, no seasoning, no added anything. Just the chicken.

The one caveat: make sure it's fully cooked to safe internal temperatures. Raw or undercooked poultry can carry Salmonella, which is harmful to dogs and to the humans handling the treats. Proper dehydration at the right temperature eliminates this risk.

Why We Turned This Into a Business

We made chicken jerky at home for years because it worked for our dogs and we felt good about what we were feeding them. Eventually, friends started asking for bags. Then family. Then people we'd never met. At some point, my wife and I looked at each other and thought, if this many people want it, maybe there's something here.

JUST CHKN is still made the same way, with the same single ingredient, with the same attention to temperature and time that we learned through years of home batches. We just do it at a scale where we can share it with a lot more dogs.
